Originally released as the B-side to the "What's Cookin'" single in early 1956, "Abilene" quickly passed its A-side in popularity to become Deafman's first Top-40 hit of the 1950s. It has become one of Deafman's most covered songs, later becoming a minor hit for The High & Tights in 1957.

"I was trying to write a one-man doo-wop song," said Deafman in an interview in 1984. "I'd heard the name before [and] thought it sounded pretty good. I had no idea it was a town in Texas."
